Grassroots anti-Brexit movements are planning to hold a series of rallies across the UK to mark one year since Theresa May triggered Article 50.
The rallies aim to send a clear message to both the country and government that Brexit can still be stopped – and that Britain remains better off staying in the EU.
One of the biggest events planned for the weekend of 24 March 2018 is the Great Northern March which will be held in the city of Leeds. Organisers claim it ‘is the large Pro-EU event planned in the North of England this year.’ The New European columnists AC Grayling and Andrew Adonis are expected to speak at the rally, as well as Jonathan Bartley, Eloise Todd, Sue Wilson, Femi Oluwole and Richard Corbett. Further information can be found on the Stop Brexit March website.
On the same day the Young European Movement Edinburgh and the European Movement in Scotland are vowing not to be silenced on Brexit by marching in Edinburgh. Further details can be found on the Eventbrite website here.
Grassroots campaigners are also organising an event in Pontypridd, South Wales on the same afternoon which will ‘protest and party for Wales’ place in Europe’. More information is available on the Eventbrite website.
In the South there will be events in Maidenhead at the Town Hall on St Ives Road (find more details on this Facebook event) and in Exeter at Belmont Park at an event organised by Devon for Europe (further details can be found on the Eventbrite website).
In the East of England all of the Eastern counties are invited to Ipswich, Suffolk to rally together ‘in peace and with open minds’ at an event to be held at the University of Suffolk. Find out more information on the the Suffolk EU Alliance website.
Meanwhile there will be a number of campaigning events around the country to coincide with the weekend of action. There is an event at the Guildhall and Stonebow in Lincoln between 10am and 2pm on Saturday. Further details can be found on the European Movement Lincolnshire website. This weekend also sees one of the first Islanders for Europe event on the Isle of Wight.
The weekend of events kicks off in Oxford on Friday 23rd March in the iconic setting of Christopher Wren’s Sheldonian Theatre, where Andrew Adonis and Will Hutton will preview their new book. For more information sign up to this Facebook event.
