Brexiteer: Don’t worry about food shortages, I’ll climb mountains to get bananas

A Brexiteer has dismissed worries about food shortages after Britain leaves the EU, saying he will climb mountains to get bananas.

Craig, a caller to Matt Stadlen’s show on radio station LBC, described talk of economic turmoil as ‘hysteria’.

And responding to reports Britain could struggle to import many fruit and vegetables from the continent in a no-deal Brexit, he said he would simply climb mountains to get bananas, even though they are not native to the UK.

Calling in to the early morning phone-in show, Craig said: ‘At the end of the day we’re all human beings and what I believe is that, beyond this hysteria and all this sort of economy rah-rah-rah… at the end of the day I’m a human being.

‘If I need a banana I’m gonna get a banana. And I don’t… people are gonna say ‘you can’t get any bananas, any fruit, any whatever’.

‘I’m gonna get it. And people are saying ‘oh, there’s not gonna be any… there’s gonna be riots or whatever’, if you’re gonna deny it anyone…’.

Asked by Stadlen where he’d get his bananas from, the Brexiteer said: ‘Well, I’m gonna get them myself. I’ll climb the mountains of anywhere.’

When it was pointed out that bananas did not grow in the UK, he said: ‘No we don’t, and neither do many place in Europe. The only place… Sweden don’t grow any bananas. They’ve got plenty.’

He added: ‘What I’m saying is, beyond all of this politics, if people need something they are going to get it.

‘At the end of the day if we leave the EU and there’s gonna be people going ‘oh my god, they’ve left the EU’, there’s a big opportunity there to earn a lot of money, so as a business you’d think ‘oh my god’.

‘These people aren’t going to the EU, so it’s gonna open up the market to a lot of different things, isn’t it?

‘EU or UK, they’re two letters at the end of the day. If I need to eat food, I’m going to get food.’

He was followed by another caller, Tim, who said: ‘My goodness me, this is why this country’s in a muddle, isn’t it?’.
