It has been reported that the Scottish Tories are so keen to avoid a disastrous ‘no deal’ Brexit that could be about to support a People’s Vote.

According to the New Statesman the Scottish Tories could announce support for a fresh referendum as early as next week/

It would be a move that would significantly increase pressure on Theresa May to hold one to break the existing Brexit impasse.

It is believed that both Ruth Davidson, the leader of the Scottish Tories, and her stand-in Jackson Carlaw are both supportive of any measures that prevent the UK crashing out of the EU. This would include a People’s Vote.

‘No deal would be disastrous and jeopardise the union so we will reluctantly have to go back to the country and ask them,’ a source told the magazine.

It reports the Scottish Tories would back a two-question referendum, which would firstly ask if the UK supports leaving the European Union or remaining on existing terms, and then secondly, if the answer is Leave do we depart on the government’s deal or without a deal.

There are some fears, however, that support from the Scottish Tories for a second EU referendum could further legitimatise the case for a second independence referendum.
