Germany has demanded Theresa May ‘take responsibility’ in a sign the economic superpower is losing patience over Brexit.
Ahead of a key EU summit and with Brexit talks deadlocked, Germany’s Europe minister Michael Roth said his message to May was: ‘Take responsibility and be constructive.’
Roth was speaking as he arrived for a meeting of the EU general affairs council on the eve of the EU heads of government summit.

The comments came as May desperately tried to keep her own cabinet together. The so-called ‘Pizza Plotters’ – eight cabinet members who met to eat takeaway while discussing whether they should resign over May’s Brexit plan – have so far decided to remain loyal.
Asked about the prospects of a no-deal Brexit while arriving at the affairs council, Belgium’s foreign minister Didier Reynders said: ‘A couple of months ago when I was meeting Jeremy Hunt I said that it’s 50/50.
‘I still believe it’s 50/50, and there is a need for some good compromise that should be made.
‘I understand the British government has its difficulties, but I also believe that the EU is united at 27, and this is in our interest to preserve union first.
‘What is going to be the outcome I don’t know. But, I also believe that even if in this week’s debate we are not going to have any kind of deal, there is still time, there is still possibility to get a deal.’
