A People’s Vote – or a second referendum – is the opportunity to give Britons that second chance to stop and think, writes BOB HALE.
How many times have we heard someone say ‘in hindsight I would not have said that or in hindsight not done this’? Those of us supporting a People’s Vote are now offering a rare opportunity to revisit what everyone seems to agree is our most important decision since the Second World War.
With the benefit of hindsight Margaret Thatcher may well not have introduced the poll tax, with hindsight Theresa May probably wouldn’t have made Boris Johnson foreign secretary and with hindsight few if any Labour MPs would have voted for war in Iraq. So before we jump, let the British people revisit Brexit with the benefit of hindsight!

37% of a restricted electorate voted to leave the EU in June 2016. 37% of Tory MPs voted to remove the PM earlier this month. Tory MPs will be able to change their minds and vote again after 12 months. Why not ‘the people’?

If Theresa May had dared to take her deal to a vote we would now be on the road to revoking Article 50 and possibly to remaining in the EU.
Instead we stumble on with Brexit, which the Centre for European Reform estimates is costing the UK £500 million a week. The prime minister should give us all back the £3 billion her seven-week postponement is costing. We could call it May delay repay!

For Theresa May to accuse Tony Blair of ‘undermining’ the Brexit talks by calling for another referendum and to call his comments an ‘insult to the office he once held’, frankly appears that she is not only losing the vote but that she is losing the plot.
At the time of the last election, Jeremy Paxman asked Theresa May five or six times ‘prime minister, you were a committed Remainer, what changed your mind?’ The question was not answered, and what we are seeing now from her is: ‘There is no greater believer than a convert.’ Preacher’s daughter indeed!
It is May who is undermining the future economic prosperity of this country and insulting the office she now holds by persisting in trying to shovel this Brexit garbage down our throats despite all the warnings produced by the Treasury and the Bank of England.

Preventing a vote is the act of a dictator. It also disfranchises more and more new voters over time. It is quite ridiculous to suggest calling for a vote is against democracy. Voting is what democracy is all about, and it should not exclude the option to change direction completely.
