Pro-Brexit group mocked as it uses 63-year-old to reach young audiences

A pro-Brexit group has been mocked for trying to reach young Brexit voters… using 63-year-old pub chain boss Tim Martin.

Leave Means Leave appears to be setting up a number of splinter groups to reach audiences, potentially in preparation for a second referendum.

It has already unveiled a campaign called Ladies for Leave – with a video fronted by former television presenter Esther McVey, who struggled to to read the autocue.

Now the campaign has formed the Future For Leave group which is fronted by the most youthful candidate they appeared to have – Wetherspoon’s boss Tim Martin.

In a video, which cuts to clips of Martin talking to elderly regulars in his pub, he tells viewers: ‘Join the new movement for young people around the UK which supports a positive, global Britain where we can leave the inward looking EU behind for a new, international future.’

The use of Martin raised eyebrows with many who pondered the thinking behind the choice.

Comedian David Schneider said: ‘Brexit videos. Where ‘young’ is defined as ‘under 65′.’

Graham Lithgow tweeted: ‘To be fair to the Leave Means Leave crowd, once they’d exhausted their massive supply of four Brexit supporting young folk, 63 year old Tim Martin was the most youthful candidate they had left.’

Others claimed that Leave Means Leave was clearly trolling the anti-Brexit brigade.

Martin’s Wetherspoon chain has just increased prices for food and drinks for a fifth time in two years – despite claiming that food price rises as a result of Brexit are a myth.
