Why we must take part in the People's March For Europe on Saturday

With a protest in Manchester next month and another in London this weekend, the grassroots fight against Brexit is taking to the streets again. Organisers of Saturday’s event KAZ LLEWELLYN and JEREMY DAVIES issue a call to arms

We must protest and we must march if we are to reclaim our future. We are not powerless and it’s not too late. The European Union has offered the UK an olive branch, a way to stop all this, a way out of this madness.

President Emmanuel Macron of France has said that ‘Of course the door remains open, always open, until the negotiations come to an end.’ That way out is the only option our Government must take to protect our future and that of generations to come.

Soft Brexit? Hard Brexit? Let’s go for No Brexit.

We’re more than a year on from the referendum vote, with the signing of Article 50 and a general election behind us, yet no one in power seems to have moved past the idiotic ‘Brexit means Brexit’ chant.

The Brexit negotiations have been a disaster so far; promises of swift decisions and guarantees of EU citizen rights have been swept aside. Our government has even attempted to go behind the backs of the EU to start trade negotiations with individual member states. Frankly it has been embarrassing.

The Government is not listening to us, so it is up to all of us to make them hear. On September 9 we will march united under one banner and one vision, for one future. We firmly believe solidarity is the only way forward, we are stronger together and stronger in the EU, and must reject Brexit.

The speakers at the rally will include grassroots activists from many national groups, including the Young European Movement, SODEM, Stand Up For Europe, New Europeans, Scientists for EU and Healthier IN. We will also have notable names, from across the political spectrum, such as the MPs Tom Brake Ed Davey, the MEPs Mary Honeyball, Seb Dance, Jean Lambert and Julie Ward, as well as the peer Baroness Wheatcroft, Jolyon Maugham QC and many others. Fashion designer Katharine Hamnett, an avid Remain supporter, is donating a T-shirt design to support People’s March.

The master of ceremonies at the rally will be Graham Hughes, freshly returned from his latest adventure: ‘The Eurodyssey Challenge’ – a non-stop journey to all 50 countries of Europe in just 18 days using just trains, buses and ferries. The day has been crowdfunded and organised by a small dedicated team, who have worked tirelessly to make the march a success. It has been far from easy. People’s March is an independent platform whose sole function is to facilitate and unify the variety of voices on the pro EU front. Regardless of politics, party affiliations, nationality, if you believe that the UK is better of in the EU, you are welcome to march alongside us.

With a PM who u-turns on a weekly basis, surely the country should be given the same option. Let’s all unite, rethink and reject Brexit now!

The People’s March for Europe takes place on Saturday, September 9, at 11am, starting at Curzon Gate, near Hyde Park Corner and ending with a protest rally in Parliament Square
