Ministers have been invited to read the ‘final’ draft of the prime minister’s Brexit deal – but there is something missing.

Cabinet members were sent an email saying they could come and view the Withdrawal Agreement and several dropped everything and dashed to the cabinet office.

But upon closer inspection it became clear the Irish backstop had been omitted. So basically the stalemate continues while the government tinkers around the edges.

An emergency meeting of the cabinet could happen as soon as Friday, according to sources, but is more likely to take place next week.

One Tory source said: ‘The pressure was building on the prime minister to reveal the legal advice. Maybe this invite was a way of trying to ease that?

‘I think some initially thought it might have some news regarding Ireland and the border but I am told it doesn’t have any of that. So to be honest there is actually not that much movement.’
