Farage predicts Ireland will leave the EU… despite overwhelming support for membership

Asked on RTE One whether he actually cared about Ireland or the consequences Brexit would have on the country, Farage made the startling claim that they would soon change their view on the EU too.

Farage said: ‘I think ultimately think Ireland would leave the EU too, I don’t think the European Union will exist in 10 years time.’

Presenter Claire Byrne then interrupts the Brexiteer to point out that the ‘latest poll figures’ show that ‘88% of people who were asked said they would stay in the EU.’

‘That’s not going to happen – that’s not on the cards,’ the presenter continued.

‘Very good,’ responded a sarcastic Farage, ‘just as you were all going to vote for the Lisbon treaty, but in the end you didn’t, you were forced to vote again.’

Byrne, however, would not allow Farage’s claims to go untested as she continued: ‘Hang on a second, the Lisbon treaty was not passed the first time, you are right, it was renegotiated, Ireland won some reassurances on sovereignty. So what was presented the second time was not the same.’

Farage dismissed her response: ‘It was all completely meaningless anyway.’

The Brexiteer’s comments follow the suggestion of BBC presenter John Humphrys that Ireland should leave the EU and join the UK to solve the Brexit impasse.
