The BBC have banned a song that calls Theresa May a liar (even though it’s number one)

Liar Liar GE2017 will not be played on Radio One’s Official Singles Chart – but you can listen to it here

The protest song, Liar Liar, was released last Friday by Captain Ska, a six-piece anti-austerity band. The song brands Theresa May a liar and jokes about her propensity toward sound bites with the lyrics ‘Saying they’re strong and stable won’t disguise / We’re still being taken for a ride.’

Despite receiving no airplay from radio stations, due to their self-imposed impartiality guidelines during election, Liar Liar GE2017 has already topped Amazon’s listing for songs downloaded in Britain and the iTunes UK chart.

BBC Radio One said in a statement: ‘We do not ban songs or artists, however our editorial guidelines require us to remain impartial and the UK is currently in an election period so we will not be playing the song.’

Just in case you’d like to sing along, here are some of the lyrics:

‘We all know politicians like telling lies

Big ones, little ones, porky pies

Saying they’re strong and stable won’t disguise

We’re still being taken for a ride

Nurses going hungry, schools in decline

I don’t recognise this broken country of mine

They’re having a laugh, let’s show them the door then

Cut the rich, not the poor.’

All proceeds from downloads will go to food banks and the People’s Assembly anti-austerity campaign until the election on June 8.
