Letters: Theresa May needs a plan on Brexit – offer a People’s Vote

With only nine months left before our EU exit, we have no coherent government proposal for Brexit which even meets Theresa May’s own commitments.

With only nine months left before our EU exit, we have no coherent government proposal for Brexit which even meets Theresa May’s own commitments.

At the same time, there must be a widespread view across both Remain and Brexit supporters that any emerging ‘fudged’ solution is going to lack political legitimacy.

For the Brexiteers, it will conflict with their core aim of ‘freedom from EU control’.

For Remainers, it will demonstrate unambiguously that the Leave vote was won on a prospectus that bore no resemblance to the post Brexit outcome.

Surely it is time for a People’s Vote with a choice of three options:

• Accept the negotiated outline agreement with the EU;

• Leave without any negotiated agreement;

• Reverse the June 2016 decision and Remain.

I do not claim that there is more than a sporting chance for the decision that almost all readers of TNE would like.

But even if, against reason, the electorate chooses one of the first two, there will at least be the political legitimacy associated with making a democratic and informed decision.

It’s the 92nd minute of the 2018 World Cup Final, England vs Germany. The score is 1-1. Kane is hacked down in the box.

No penalty given. No VAR.

Germany hoof it up the other end and score.

England fans riot: it’s not fair, the officials are bent, the decision was wrong, there should have been a chance to see the foul… and so on.

How many England fans understand that’s how Remainers feel about the EU Referendum and the need for a People’s Vote?

Anyway, c’mon the lads!
