Anna Soubry has hit out at the ‘bunch of thugs’ that heckled the speeches at a People’s Vote rally in Sunderland.

The Conservative MP was interrupted by a counter protest who were using megaphones to try to drown out her passionate defence of giving Britons a final say on Brexit.

Soubry said in a tweet that the group heckling the speeches and chanting ‘liars’ were ‘bringing shame on a great city and its people.’

She told the pro-Brexit hecklers that respecting democracy involved ‘being dignified, listening to the speeches, understanding the arguments, and not putting up with the awful nonsenses which are clearly from a teeny-weeny minority.’

As police intervened she told the crowds: ‘I’m not going to be drowned out by a couple of people who have been down the pub.

‘So ladies and gentleman, what I urge you to do – I know you won’t be put off the Brexit bully boys and girls, you’ll be true to what you believe in.

‘But we now need to come together and we need to get out there, every weekend, in the evenings if you can do it, and make the case, make the argument.’
