Michael Gove tried to speak French in the Commons today – but reverted to speaking English with a French accent instead.

The environment secretary and Brexiteer’s ‘Allo ‘Allo moment came as he was answering a question from Tory MP Kevin Foster, who asked about President Emmanuel Macron’s recent comments on fishing rights and demanded a promise to Torbay fishermen Britain would control its own policy.

Gove initially started to respond in faltering French before appearing to be halted by speaker John Bercow. Gove then reverted to English, saying “Sorry, I’ll translate – the French president is on this occasion wrong” – adding a comic Gallic accent to the final word.

It was met with a cry from Bercow of “stunning. Absolutely stunning. The articulacy, the accent. What a dramatic performance by the right honourable gentleman.”
