As a long-standing Tory I'm hoping they get a drubbing at the local elections

As a long-standing centre-right Tory voter for more than 60 years, I am appalled by the extremist slide which has moved the party too far to the right for my taste.

In fact, it has become so right wing that it is similar to the Republican Party in the US, something which is contrary to the British sense of fair play.

The way that the Tories have been handling the Brexit issue has been at best, utterly incompetent and at worst, almost treasonous. Their only interest is the Tory Party, to hell with everyone else.

As a result I will not be voting Tory at any future elections, either national or local. My hope, albeit an impossibly difficult one to achieve, is that the Tories get a drubbing at the coming local elections and that the Lib Dems win a substantial number of councils.

• Theresa May tries to suppress the growing evidence Brexit will have a negative economic effect, and tries to prevent parliament having a say. Amber Rudd says cutting 20,000 police has nothing to do with the rise in violent crime. Boris Johnson calls Corbyn a ‘useful idiot’, whilst producing no evidence for his own assertions on Russia. This is a Government that, by any standard, is not fit to govern.

• Theresa May says ‘Brexit allows more for the NHS’. Brexit is currently costing the country £300 million a week. We will have a divorce bill of £39 billion. We will be paying the EU until 2045. We will still have to fund the money that was returned by the EU for UK projects.

Growth for the UK is likely to be the lowest in the G20. So is Theresa May’s comment just pre-local election rhetoric or has she really discovered a magic money tree?
